Cognition and Age
Brain training games are a big business and far reaching benefits are claimed. One of the larget trials carried out to determine the effect of brain training programmes, the ACTIVE study, was sponsored by US National institute on Aging. The study ramdomly assigned more than 2000 healthy people of average age of 74, to one of the four groups - memory, reasoning, speed, and a 'no contact' control group. Each group received ten sessions of training. The trails showed that the training improved cognitive capabilities. More interestingly, they continued to perform far better five years later than those who received no training at all.it also showed that the improvements were highly specific to their training, For example, those took part in moemory training did not improve in reasoning skills. The trail does suggest that older people can improve their conginitive abilities by keeping their brain active and delay the onset of reduced conginitive powers.
